Common Symptoms

When to call us

If you recognize any of these warning signs, stop using the appliance and call our dispatcher. Continuing to run a failing unit usually turns a small repair into an expensive one.

  • Disposal hums but does not spin
  • Disposal will not turn on at all
  • Water leaks from under the unit
  • Loud grinding or metallic rattle
  • Slow drain even after disposal runs
  • Reset button trips repeatedly
  • Bad odor that returns after cleaning

Garbage disposals are deceptively simple appliances: an electric motor, a grinding chamber, two impellers and a drain port. But the failure modes are surprisingly varied, and a homeowner with their hand near the grind chamber can be seriously injured if the unit unexpectedly cycles. Always turn off the disposal at the wall switch and the breaker before attempting to clear a jam yourself — or just call us.

A disposal that hums but does not spin is the textbook symptom of a jammed grinding ring. We carry the hex-key tool that fits the bottom of every InSinkErator unit and most Waste King models; ten seconds with that tool plus pressing the reset button restores normal operation in the majority of cases. If the unit will not restart after clearing the jam, the start capacitor or motor windings have likely failed and a new unit is more cost-effective than rebuilding the motor.

Leaks under a disposal come from one of three places: the sink flange at the top of the unit, the dishwasher inlet on the side, or the discharge tube at the bottom. The sink flange leak is the most common and is caused by old plumber's putty that has dried out and cracked. Replacing the flange and re-bedding it with fresh putty solves the leak permanently. Side and bottom leaks usually mean an internal seal has failed and the disposal should be replaced rather than rebuilt.

Persistent bad odors are not a mechanical failure but a maintenance issue. We will clean the unit on the spot using a citrus-based foaming cleaner and explain the maintenance routine that prevents the odor from returning: ice cubes plus rock salt monthly to scour the grind chamber, a citrus peel weekly to freshen the seals, and never grinding fibrous waste like celery, corn husks or potato peels.

When replacement is the right call, we stock InSinkErator Badger 5, Badger 500, Evolution Compact and Evolution Excel, plus Waste King L-1001 and L-2600. We can usually quote a replacement-installed price over the phone based on your existing unit. Call (954) 245-6863 for same-day garbage disposal service anywhere in Broward County.
